1. The role of a yoga mat

Provide support and comfort: Yoga mats can provide a smooth, soft surface, so that the practitioner has a better support and comfort experience during exercise.
Protect the joints: In exercise, some positions require relying on the hands, knees, elbows and other parts of the body to support the weight; long-term practice may cause stress and wear on these parts. A yoga mat can provide a soft surface, relieve stress and wear, and play the role of shock absorption, thereby protecting the joints and the body.
Prevent sliding: Because of the need to maintain a stable posture during exercise, a yoga mat can help prevent falls or injuries caused by sliding hands, feet or body.
Easy to clean: Yoga mat can avoid direct contact with the ground, reduce the invasion of dirt and bacteria, and provide more convenient cleaning and hygiene.

2. Yoga mat material selection

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) : This is the most common yoga mat material; it is cheap, has good skid resistance, and is durable, but the weight is heavy, not easy to carry, and not very environmentally friendly.
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) : This is a new type of environmentally friendly material, lighter and softer than PVC, but also has good anti-slip and resilience, but is slightly less durable.
NBR (Nitrile butadiene rubber) : This is a high-density rubber material with a larger thickness, suitable for exercise mats or exercises that require more buffer. But the anti-slip and resilience are not very good.
Cork: This is a natural material that has good moisture absorption, sweat ability, and antibacterial and deodorant effects. However, the surface of cork is hard and needs to be used with other materials.

3. Yoga mat thickness selection

Below 3mm: This thickness of the yoga mat is relatively light and easy to carry, and has a good sense of contact and stability on the ground. Suitable for those who go out a lot or enjoy balancing.
4mm~6mm: This thickness of the yoga mat is the most common and most practical choice; there is a balance between the buffer and the stability. Suitable for most people.
More than 7 mm: This thickness of the yoga mat is soft and comfortable, and can provide more support when the joints are stressed or need to relax. But there may be a bit of wobbling when you do the balancing.

4. Yoga mat size selection

At present, the size of the yoga mat is mainly 173x61cm and 183x61cm, and the length of the mat needs to be proportional to the height. If the height is more than 170 cm, then the extended version of the mat will be more suitable. In short, when purchasing a yoga mat, we should choose a suitable mat according to our actual situation and needs, considering the material, thickness, length, non-slip, resilience, and other factors. If you are a beginner and want an affordable and excellent-performance yoga mat, you can choose a PVC yoga mat. This yoga mat is available in a variety of colors and has a thickness of 5 mm, which makes it non-slip and durable. If you are an advanced practitioner and want a light and environmentally friendly yoga mat that fits the floor, you can choose a TPE yoga mat. This yoga mat is designed with a double-layer structure, and the surface has a fine texture to increase friction. If you are a naturist and want a yoga mat that wicks moisture, wicks sweat, is antibacterial, and is deodorant, you can choose a cork yoga mat. Made of cork and natural rubber, this yoga mat is breathable, anti-bacterial, and will not grow stale in sweaty or humid climates.

5. Yoga mat cleaning and maintenance

Do a quick clean-up after each class. Wipe your yoga mat with a damp cloth, or use water and a disinfectant solution to kill bacteria and get rid of smelly sweat and feet. But do not use essential oils, because oils may clog the pores of the material and, although very fragrant, will reduce the anti-slip performance of the mat. Do not use soap or body wash either, as some mats may absorb the soap and become very slippery over the next few days. After cleaning the mat, be sure to air-dry it before rolling it up. The newly acquired mat also needs to be cleaned first to remove the odor. Because from the factory, there will be more or less odor residue. It's handled the same way. In any case, the practice of yoga itself is the most important, and the yoga mat is just a tool for practice. I hope you can find a yoga mat that suits you through this article.
